“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
Colossians 3:16

MUSIC MINISTRY

Music Director Tom Salmon is a multi-talented musician and vocalist who has been with the Dorset Church since August of 2018. The church has an extensive and growing collection of choral and instrumental music which the choir performs each Sunday from September to June. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, and before worship on Sundays at 9 am. Each Sunday, Tom also shares musical moments  with the children in the Sunday school.

There are currently about 20 active choir members; new singers are welcome and encouraged to join them. In addition to regular Sunday services, a Mid-Winter Concert is presented with a different theme each year.

Other musical events include the Bach Marathon to celebrate the birth of Johann Sebastian Bach in March, with Tom playing a selection of the composer’s best-loved works on the Church’s new organ; a Memorial Day Service and Parade to Maple Hill Cemetery, the site of the original church dating from 1784; Robert Frost Sunday in October with the choir singing selections from Randall Thompson’s ‘Frostiana,’ accompanied by the recital of some of Frost’s poetry; spooky organ music in the darkened sanctuary on Halloween Night; caroling at the Christmas Tree Lighting on the Dorset Town Green accompanied by Tom on baritone, followed by a potluck supper in the church vestry; and a new tradition—a Santa Lucia Concert in mid-December, a new tradition with Nordic Harmoni performing songs in Swedish and English.

Tom also directs the Dorset BBQ-ers, a barbershop quartet of four choir members, who can be seen and heard at various area venues and events to sing beloved classics as well as the Star-Spangled Banner at baseball games and other events.

The Church also hosts Harp Camp in June for aspiring musicians conducted by Harpist Alix Raspe-Gray, and Theater Camp in July with local community theater group the Dorset Players. It also serves as extra rehearsal space throughout the year.

In addition, Tom directs another choir during September’s High Holy Days at Israel Congregation in Manchester; rehearses and sings with the Bennington County Choral Society for two annual concerts; and participates in summer concerts performed by the Washington County Band and the Poultney/Granville Band. Several choir members also belong to other singing groups, including the Bennington County Choral Society and Nordic Harmoni.
